About the CNA exam

Who takes the CNA exam?

People who have finished a state-approved nurse aide training program and want to be listed on their state's nurse aide registry. Federal rules require at least 75 hours of training, and many states require more.

How is the written exam structured?

It depends on your state and test provider. Many states use the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP), whose written exam has 70 multiple-choice questions (60 scored and 10 unscored pretest questions) and a 2-hour limit. Many states also offer an oral version, where the questions are read aloud.

What score do I need to pass?

Each state sets its own passing score. Our practice exams use 70% correct (42 of 60) as a benchmark. Aim higher than that before your test day.

Does this cover the skills test?

The CNA exam also has a hands-on skills evaluation, where you perform several skills such as handwashing, measuring vital signs or transferring a resident. Our questions cover the steps and safety rules behind those skills, but you also need to practice them in person.

Is this the official exam?

No. This is practice material to help you prepare. The CNA exam is given by a testing company your state chooses, such as Credentia, Prometric or Headmaster. This site is not affiliated with any of them or with any state.
